Stumbleupon… just like Digg is a a great resource for traffic. However, in order for you to be successful you need to know the ins and outs of stumbleupon and how to harness its power. Below are a list of things you need to do to fine tune your Stumbleupon posts.

  • Choose the right category. If you pick the wrong category you won’t get the targeted traffic you’re after. If you are looking to sell a product or capture readers the wrong category may get you page views, but it won’t convert. You want to make the most out of the traffic your bring in.
  • Be sure to add a StumbleUpon icon to your blog. Make it easy for people to stumble your posts.
  • Take the time to create quality posts and then stumble them. There is nothing wrong with stumbling your own post. Just make sure the posts hold some value and what I like to call a “long self life”.
  • Add friends that are related to what you stumble about. The more friends you have that are into what you stumble the better your chances of getting more stumbles and traffic.
  • One way to get traffic and more stumbles is to join an exchange. Exchanges such as http://www.stumblexchange.com/ and http://suexchange.com/ allow you to exchange stumbles.
  • Pay attention to your site referrals. If someone writes a post and it links to you stumble there post. It will help them help you.
  • Titles are important. How you title your post will depend on how many people view your post. Take a look at other top posts and see if you can see a pattern. How to’s, top ten, lists, video and image related titles can grab a lot of attention.
  • Even though having ads before the content works well for ad conversions, don’t do that on pages where you are stumbling posts. People will bail if they think it is a ploy to get clicks. It may even cause people to thumbs down your post. The idea here is to capture eyes and subscribers that will comeback. Don’t work to have to have the same people return and then bounce from your page.
  • Place images and / or videos above the fold in posts. The will help keep readers around for a while and prevent the posts from looking plain.

What other methods work for you? Post them here and if I re-write this post I’ll link to you as a reference.
